I am a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Massachusetts. I specialize in tutoring English, Literature, Phonics, Reading, and Writing, as well as test prep for the HSPT and ISAT. One of my greatest achievements is my work as the sole Reading Specialist in a Chicago public school with 800 students, where I worked with elementary and middle school students. My work with students on reading skills resulted in an improvement in the overall ISAT scores of 15.8% over a single year.My approach to tutoring is threefold: to find interesting materials for the student, to use mapping to define the structure and achieve better understanding of the material, and to include an element of fun or games in lessons for variation. For example, I like to use a game I created called "The Language Arts Game." This game helps students develop confidence in their own ability by encouraging them to tell a story from their personal experience, based on feeling a basic emotion. After the students tell their stories, we apply them by mapping the stories, writing them down in more detail, and then reading them aloud.My hobbies include writing, drawing, sculpting, and jewelry.
