Education
Master of Science in Analytics, Northwestern University, anticipated Dec 2017 Master of Arts in Applied Mathematics, Summa Cum Laude, Arizona State University 2015 -My graduate research was in computational neuroscience. I focused on developing models of motor neurons after spinal chord injury to better understand the physiological and chemical changes that take place. During this time I also had a fellowship with the Mathematics Education Department. I met with a cohort of other graduate students and professors weekly to discuss teaching methodology, research, and student progress. Bachelor of Science in Mathematics, Cum Laude, Whitworth University - While at Whitworth I tutored Calculus students and local high school and middle school students. I also did a year long research project in algebraic geometry and another in mathematical biology.
Experience
I have been teaching mathematics and physics since 2011. My teaching career has ranged from public schools via Teach for America, to university classes, to private schools. This background has given me the experience necessary to understand the needs of students of all backgrounds from elementary grades to university. During my graduate studies I had a fellowship with the Mathematics Education department that enabled me to collaborate on their research and teach classes that employed methods from their research. When I tutor I use research driven methods and principles from the wonderful book, "How the Brain Learns Mathematics." I think that one of the biggest problems facing students in mathematics is that it is often taught as an isolated rote set of rules to memorize. I strongly believe that students need to see the physical ties to mathematics in order to internalize the concepts. In my own classroom I do a lot of project based and problem based learning so that students develop mathematics through their existing understandings of the world around them. Developing new formulas themselves through an applied problem helps students see the meaning behind each formula, enhances their creativity, and enables them to approach novel problems with confidence. When I tutor, I go beyond "homework help" to give deep meanings to the concepts they are struggling with.
