Education

Journalism major at Northwestern University, 3.9 GPA, class of 2015.

Experience

I was an AP scholar with distinction and scored a 2310 the first and only time I took the SAT. I helped both of my siblings through the college application process, from SAT prep to essay writing, and I've edited the essays of friends and strangers for years. I want to be a tutor because I love seeing people improve, and I believe I have the right combination of interpersonal skills, intellectual capabilities and patience to foster that improvement. I enjoy working with kids of all ages, up to and including MY age, and think that everybody has something to offer in the way of writing - it's my job to bring that something out. As a journalism major in the most competitive journalism program in the country, I've learned a lot about writing, of course, but also about the topics I write on - and I write on a wide range of topics, from homelessness to music to bioethics. I've had to think quickly and incorporate scientific/mathematical data into my stories, as well as analyze the value of less structured evidence. I've written stories for Popular Science, San Francisco Weekly and various Chicago-area publications like TimeOut Chicago. I've been a senior editor at my school's online journalism outlet for two years.

Hobbies

I love music - I write songs, I'm a classically trained soprano and I was in a funk band last year :). I'm a counselor for my school's freshman pre-orientation backpacking program, which basically means that I lead 10 frightened freshmen into the woods and let them find their way out, both physically and emotionally. I write a lot of poetry and fiction, and I love to read, both solo and aloud; when I babysit here in Evanston I usually give funny voices to the characters in bedtime stories. I love learning and knowledge, but my "life of the mind" in no way deprives me of a social life.
