Experience

I highly enjoy being a tutor because I have true passion for the subjects that I teach. It is a pleasure helping my tutees to excel and to realize their academic goals. I believe that everyone can benefit from working one-on-one with a personalized teacher; this relationship holds both participants accountable in ways that depart from the traditional classroom experience. Tutoring allows for a tailored, educational approach, from which all students can greatly benefit. A tutor can provide specific strategies, guidance, and lessons that best suit the needs, personality, and learning style of the individual student. I believe tutor and tutee must work together to determine problematic areas, to devise an effective strategies to master difficult material, and finally to achieve academic success. Hobbies

My approach to tutoring: The ingredient most essential in successful teaching is passion for the subject. My own passion for language and literature arises from my undergraduate and undergraduate educations and from my work as a tutor. My aim when tutoring is to share with and inspire in others this same passion. Over the past six years, I have worked with students of all ages and backgrounds in Massachusetts, New York City, and now Chicago, IL, helping them to master difficult subjects, to gain confidence, and ultimately to excel independently. My philosophy of teaching is defined by accountability and individual exploration. I believe that the relationship between tutor and tutee is fundamentally a partnership, with each participant striving towards the same end of academic excellence and personal responsibility. On the one hand, it is crucial for a tutor to be sensitive and supportive of her students, while simultaneously challenging them to improve upon their performance earnestly and sincerely. On the other hand however, a tutee must be committed to his or her studies and dedicated to making progress. The tutor and the tutee must be trusting and comfortable with one another in order for effective instruction to take place. I am also a proponent of the notion that discussion, rather than lecture, is the best kind of teaching. Rather than giving my students the answers, I prefer to ask questions—be they interpretive or more objective—and allow them to arrive at the solutions themselves. This is a process that I’ve found has yielded great results. Through conversation and testing different lines of inquiry, I guide my tutees through difficult concepts or problems, whether they are of a linguistic, literary, analytic, or grammatical nature. My primary objective is always, however, to assist students in fully understanding the subject(s) and becoming self-sufficient learners. Tutoring has been and continues to be an incredibly rewarding experience for me. It is a true pleasure seeing my students succeed. I tutor all levels of Latin, dealing with issues of grammar, vocabulary, and translation. I also teach English grammar, vocabulary building, writing skills and mechanics, and literature. I work with students on homework, essays, and studying for tests, as well as giving my own assignments when appropriate. In tutoring sessions, I utilize the Socratic method, posing critical questions on the material throughout. I try to always be approachable to my tutees, providing an environment for learning that is encouraging yet rigorous. I ask my students to tell me specifically what they are struggling with, or, alternatively, if they are unsure, we work together to determine the things that are problematic. I prefer to tailor my teaching techniques to the needs of each tutee, since no one student earns exactly alike. Sometimes school can become monotonous and mundane, but I think it should always be stimulating. I want to help students get excited about Latin, language, and literature! A bit more about me: My ultimate goal is to pursue a PhD in Medieval Studies or Linguistics. I am deeply passionate about academics and the wonderful rewards that come from life-long learning. I believe that above all else education should inspire students to develop intellectual curiosity and to test individual lines of inquiry. In addition to academics, I feel very strongly about animals and animal rescue. I have two pets: a senior Maine Coon cat, and a five-month-old Terrier-mix puppy. I would love to adopt more in the future. I also love drinking coffee, movies, road trips, swimming, and collecting vintage t-shirts.
